Album 'Sagrada Famíia'
The initiative to construct a church on the spot the Sagrada Família as we know now is to be build, was originally made by Joseph Maria Bocabella. In 1882 the construction of the crypt was started by architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. In 1885 the job has transferred to Antoni Gaudi's, who rigorously changed the existing plan. In his opinion the construction should take about10 years. Soon this seamed not feasible. The construction took so much time, that Gaudi decided in 1914 to work only on this project. So he did until his death in1926. It became his most famous work. As a tribute he was buried in the crypt of the Sagrada Família.
After his death the construction continued with a lot of pauses caused by the Civil War and World War II, and later on strongly dependent on the donations of visitors. The construction took so long, that the first parts has already the need for restoration.
Now the work is expected to be ready in 2026.
Even though, in the spirit of Gaudi was maintained, the building process after his death was not so easy. Gaudi was a intuitive builder, very practical in problem solving and also continuously searching for stylistic modifications to carry out.
Therefore It is not surprising, that, in the course of time the style as well as the materials used are 'modernized'.
The interior has beautiful colors and also the newer parts of the exterior are light with accents of color.
However on a gloomy day, the older parts are twisted and contrasting with the statues and you cannot get loose from the image of a giant sandcastle. In particular I tried to caught this feeling in these photographs of the Sagrada Família.
