Album Santiago
Santiago the Chile was two times the base for our journeys. On our travel to South America in June and July 2002 was Santiago the centre of our trips to Valparaiso, the Atacama Desert and the long fly to Eastern Island, situated 3,500 kilometers from the mainland of Chile in the middle of the Pacific and in 2008 for our travel to the deep south of Chile, Punta Arenas. The different albums will be placed on my website in time.
Santiago is an immense city with 4.5 million inhabitants, but the centre is just a relative small territory around the origin of the city, the ‘Plaza the Armas', the customary central exercise field that can be found in all the cities of Spanish origin. It is a relative old city, founded in 1541 by Pedro de Valdiva near a good defensible hill ‘Cerro Santa Lucia' (Hill of Saint Lucia) on a kind of large island in the Mapoche river. Furthermore in this old city there are places of interest as the ‘Cerro San Cristóbal' (Hill of Saint Christopher), the botanical gardens, the zoo etc. Also a number of buildings are of interest of which the impressive cast-iron station and the covered market hall are quite particular and for sure also one of the oldest churches in South America, the ‘Iglesia San Francisco' (Church of Saint Francisco) at the ‘Plaza San Francisco’ (Square of Saint Francisco), with its colonial museum annexes.
In this album are photographs from 2002 as well as 2008 combined.
