The 'Geestman' navigates via the city canal 'Luttik Oudorp' with his nice historic facades to the cheese market in the center of Alkmaar.

The rebuilding of the historic vessel 'De Geestman' (Soul of man), was youth project to educate young people craftmanship. These barrier vessels (in Dutch: 'Damschuiten') had to be build very robust, because they had to be pulled over slopes put against the dikes (dam), with all the cargo in it. In many places, with not too different water levels between the canals, no locks were build because of the costs.
