Album Valparaíso:
During our Chile Travel in 2002, we made a trip from Santiago through the wine region north of Santiago to the large and colorful port of Valparaiso. The houses are often painted in bright colors, even in the main street. But the most photogenic colors you can find in the quarters against the steep hills that surround the city. The houses seem like a tidal wave going engulf the city. Against the steep hills of the famous ‘Cerro Concepción’ a number of lifts are constructed to make it the resident’s comfortable to reach their quarters. As hectic as the city seams itself, so peace reigns the hills, at least during the day.
Hectic and colorful are the key words. When I look back at my pictures, the same atmosphere strikes me as I felt in the tango district in Buenos Aires, Caminito.
In April 2014 a disaster hit the city. A huge fire destroyed a large part of the quarters on the hills. The photo, published in the ‘Elsevier’ magazine of April 10, 2014 say more than words. It is imaginable that some of these pictures are no more than an echo of the past, alas!
